How many presidential candidate debates between the Democratic and Republican nominees will take place before the 2020 general election?

The Republican and Democratic presidential nominees are tentatively scheduled to participate in three debates, the first planned for 29 September 2020 (Debates.org, BBC, Newsweek). Virtual debates would count so long as they are televised in real time and the candidates are able to address each other.
