The flow of people illegally crossing the US border with Mexico remains a hot political issue, with President Biden making his first trip to the border in January 2023 (NPR, ABC News, Axios). The question will be suspended on 30 June 2023 and the outcome determined using data as reported by CBP for the months of January 2023 through June 2023 once data for June 2023 are first reported (CBP). Between January 2022 and June 2022, CBP reported a total of 1,228,213 encounters in the US southwest as of the launch of this question.
