"If the [EU] Commission elects to designate Twitter a VLOP  [Very Large Online Platform] under the DSA [Digital Services Act] the business will face an accelerated compliance timetable with oversight kicking in in February next year — rather than in February 2024 — and with a tougher set of requirements to assess and mitigate risks on its platform.

All that compliance requirement — with far fewer staff… is… just obviously going to be a total car crash 😬

Fines under the DSA scale up to 6% of global annual turnover. While, under the GDPR [General Data Protection Regulation] the regime already allows for fines up to 4% for major breaches. So if Twitter isn’t bankrupt yet is may just be a matter of time before its owner’s recklessness toward legal risk finishes the job.

COMMENT:  This question is challenging me to wade in very deep waters!  The 2nd article analyzes the possible financial impact of all of the personnel cuts & losses, advertising income losses, and possible subscription income.  It also speculates about how much Musk is worth and whether he'll cover Twitter's losses himself.

@Anneinak @DNK89 @lbiii How plausible is the scenario, in your folks' view, that advertising revenue continues to drop for whatever reasons, such as advertiser's losing faith in Musk's vision of Twitter? Revenue via advertisements accounts for more than 90% of its gross revenue.

I weigh this scenario a little heavier than I had expected and currently my forecast almost coincides with the simple average of all our four numerical estimates. Lots of variance between our forecasts.

What if Musk wants to challenge the Youtube model?

@GL2814 Then what? Could you elaborate further? I'm curious what you have to say on that hypothetical.

The DPRK are more predictable than Musk. The closest comparison class is Howard Hughes, but that seems to fail. I heard an interview with someone that knew him for a long time on NPR if memory serves. He said two things:

1. Musk likes it when his hair is on fire

2. Twitter could add content like Youtube to get paid.

Was denken sie?

re:  advertising revenue

I think it is highly likely that advertising revenue will fall off.

-from what I've read, many of the Twitter staff who interfaced with advertisers are gone, leaving advertisers feeling at loose ends

-everyone is nervous about how content will evolve without controls:  will advertising inadvertently be juxtaposed with content unacceptable to the advertiser?  I think advertisers will take a wait-and-see approach.

-economists are predicting rough economic times ahead.  Advertising is one of the first areas that companies reduce when it is necessary to reduce expenses.

@Anneinak Interesting. And don't forget Musk's feud with Apple now.

@probahilliby,

re:  Musk vs Apple feud.

I read about 15 hrs ago that Musk met with Tim Cook and all problems are resolved.  Cook assured Musk that Apple was not going to ban Twitter from its app store and Musk assured Cook that he wasn't going to start making cellphones.

I'm still having a difficult time understanding what exactly you mean by this.
