When will Brazil's Senate approve Jorge Messias to the Supreme Federal Court (SFT)?
Closing Jul 18, 2026 07:01AM UTC
On 20 November 2025, Brazilian President Lula appointed Solicitor General Jorge Messias to the SFT, though the Senate delayed consideration into 2026 (AP, Valor International, Rio Times). SFT justices are appointed by the president with the "approval of an absolute majority of the Federal Senate" (Constitution of Brazil, see Article 101). The National Congress of Brazil, which includes the Senate, is in session from 2 February 2026 to 17 July 2026 (Constitution of Brazil, see Article 57). The question will close on Messias being rejected by the full Senate, the president withdrawing the nomination of Messias, or Messias publicly announcing that he has withdrawn his name from consideration.
