On 12 March 2020, Major League Baseball (MLB) announced that it was suspending "Spring Training games and to delay the start of the 2020 regular season by at least two weeks due to the national emergency created by the coronavirus pandemic" (MLB, Sports Illustrated). Whether the first MLB game is played before spectators is immaterial.
