Pope Leo XIV, the first Pope from the US, grew up in and near Chicago, Illinois (NBC Chicago, US National Archives). For the purposes of this question, the United States includes only the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Physical presence on the ground is required, and mere overflight of pertinent territory will not count. The question will close early if Leo XIV ceases to be the pope.
