Before 1 May 2026, will Benjamin Netanyahu cease to be the prime minister of Israel and/or will new Knesset elections be called?
Closing May 01, 2026 07:01AM UTC
The Israeli government survived a vote to dissolve the Knesset on 12 June 2025, and the opposition must wait six months before it can introduce another bill to dissolve the Knesset and force early elections (Middle East Eye, Al Jazeera). An Israeli government may also fall automatically if it fails to pass a budget (MSN [Bloomberg]). New elections are due by 27 October 2026, and elections must be held no later than five months after a law dissolving the Knesset early is passed (Times of Israel, Gov.il - Basic Law: The Knesset, see Section 35). The actual date set for new Knesset elections is immaterial, and whether Netanyahu runs in a called election is immaterial.
