Before 1 January 2027, will the NBA officially announce that an expansion franchise has been awarded to Las Vegas, Nevada?
Closing Jan 01, 2027 08:01AM UTC
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver revealed in December 2025 that the NBA is planning to make a decision regarding expanding the number of franchises in the professional basketball league in 2026 (ESPN, Fox 5 Vegas). The geographic name chosen is immaterial (e.g., "Nevada Walruses" vs "Las Vegas Walruses"), and the exact location where home games will be played is immaterial (e.g., the NFL's NY Giants and NY Jets play in New Jersey, but they are considered "New York" teams). A "shared" franchise will count if one of the named cities is set to be a host (e.g., the Kansas City-Omaha Kings Omaha Magazine). The question will close as of the NBA announcing the location for two new franchises or the NBA officially announcing that no locations for a new franchise or franchises will be announced before 1 January 2027.
