Challenges
A decision by Germany's domestic intelligence agency to classify AfD as a right-wing extremist organization has reignited debate in the country over whether to ban the party (CNN, Deutsche Welle, Politico). AfD came in second place in the February 2025 German federal election (BBC). Three entities (the Bundestag, the Bundesrat, and the Federal Government) can file such an application (German Federal Constitutional Court [in German]).
