Before 1 July 2026, will a major US retailer announce that it will begin rounding all domestic cash transactions to values denominated by more than one cent (e.g., round to the nearest nickel)?
Closing Jul 01, 2026 07:01AM UTC
As the US prepares to stop minting new pennies in early 2026, retailers are expected to eventually begin rounding cash transactions to the nearest five cents, which is what happened in Canada after it discontinued making new pennies in 2013 (CBC, ABC7, Entrepreneur). For the purposes of this question, "major US retailers" are those in the top ten of sales as ranked and reported for 2025 by the National Retail Federation (National Retail Federation). The question will close upon the announcement, irrespective of the date the rounding will begin so long as a specific date for the commencement of rounding is included in the announcement.
