Before 1 August 2026, will a US federal court issue declaratory and/or injunctive relief preventing California schools from allowing the participation of males in athletic competitions designated for females?

On 9 July 2025, the US Justice Department sued the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF, the governing body for high school sports in the state) and the California Department of Education (CDE, which has authority over CIF), stating that, among other things, allowing males to participate in female athletic competitions violates Title IX of the Civil Rights Act (Department of Justice, ABC News). A preliminary or permanent injunction preventing the practice will count, as will a declaratory judgment that the practice is illegal and/or unconstitutional (Cornell - Declaratory Judgment, Cornell - Injunctive Relief). A settlement between the parties that would prevent the participation of males in athletic competitions designated for females will count.
