Closing Dec 31, 2025 08:01AM UTC
US Mortgage rates remained elevated in the first eight months of 2025, but relief may come if/when the Federal Reserve cuts rates later in the year (NPR, The Street, CNBC). The question will be suspended 30 December 2025 and the outcome determined using Freddie Mac 30-year fixed rate mortgage average data as reported by the Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) database (FRED). The data are expected to be released on Wednesday 31 December 2025 rather than the usual Thursday (1 January 2026) due to the New Year's Day holiday. For the week of 26 December 2024, the weekly average interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages in the US was 6.85%.
