The Swiss government announced that a petition for a referendum on a cap to the country's population had enough signatures to trigger a vote, which is scheduled to be held on 14 June 2026 (Swissinfo.ch, Deutsche Welle). The measure, put forward by the anti-immigration Swiss People's Party, would require the government to take actions to limit population growth if the permanent resident population exceeds 9.5 million before 2050 (No 10-million-strong Switzerland! Sustainability Initiative Website, AP).
